What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?



Modern car keys come with unique chips that are unique to each vehicle, unlike older keys. This keeps thieves from taking the key and turning on the car.

Transponder Codes

As its name suggests, a transponder sends out an encoded signal with a four-digit number code when it is questioned by air traffic control. The first digit is assigned an 8 and each subsequent digit increases in value by one until the seventh digit reaches nine, which is then two. Then, the whole VIN is converted back to its original form by multiplying the weight of each digit by 11. If the result is the identical to the check digit then the VIN will be valid.
